Texas WISP Expands at 7% Monthly

AirCanopy, a wireless internet service provider (WISP) in Red Oak, Texas, is expanding its customer base at a rate of over 7% per month. “A WISP can not only survive but grow profitably if the ‘governor’ of needing capital for equipment is removed. We take that governor off by financing customer premises and network operating center equipment,” says Bill MacNamara, VP of Business Development at Agility Solutions.

Daniel Zimmerman, operations manager and co-owner at AirCanopy says, “We started with Agility Solutions in August of 2005. I was looking for large sums, and doing a master lease. Things went very well. Agility’s focus is on wireless broadband, so they understand our financials.”

AirCanopy leases customer premises equipment from Agility Solutions which supports rapid expansion without a significant up-front capital outlay. The monthly service fees charged to customers cover the lease payments and operating costs for the service. This creates a strong cash-flow scenario.

Zimmerman says that Agility Solutions’ master lease has improved AirCanopy’s business, because finances are no longer the critical path item they used to be. He explains, “Plans are not contingent on getting the next lease done. If we know we have the equipment, we can make plans for expansion. We have a better probability of success because we have financing in place.”

AirCanopy reaches over 1500 customers in a 1600 square mile area, with broadband internet, VOIP, and email services for individuals and business networks. They also set up hotspots in restaurants and provided Internet access in guestrooms at hotels.

"We’re adding 100 [customers] a month, and when we hire and train another crew we’ll add 150 customers a month,” Zimmerman says.
